Types of computers
There exist many different types of computers that can not use each other's software. Debian software is available for the following types of computers ("architectures"), first the most popular:

all current desktop and laptop PCs, using
64-bit processors by AMD with "AMD64" extensions, namely
since Athlon64 and Opteron,
and also Intel with "EM64T" extensions,
namely Xeon and Core 2 and higher.
These processors can also use i386 software, but then only in 32-bit mode. |

This means all desktop and laptop PCs, since ca. 2008.
(i386 will work too, with some limitations.)
=> If your computer runs, or can run, Windows
95/98/200x/ME/XP/Vista/7/8/10,
and your computer is not suitable for 64-bits mode,
then use i386.
[Note: this does not include Windows RT, Phone, Mobile or IoT variants]
=> If your computer is a Mac from 2006 up to 2020 (Intel processor), then amd64 is suitable for it.
For everything except amd64 and i386, there usually are special requirements. Before ordering, please carefully study all information available via http://www.debian.org/ports.
The source codes on the Source DVDs and Blurays are architecture-independent and can be compiled anywhere.
Installer DVDs and Blurays
On Installer DVD-1 and Bluray-1, the installation starter is included. For amd64 and i386, you can directly boot from them; both BIOS and EFI supported, PC and Mac. For other architectures, some special actions will usually be required to get the installation starter running, as described in the corresponding Installation Manual.
Further, installable software packages are available on the Installer DVDs and Blurays, ordered by decreasing popularity. On DVD-1 resp. Bluray-1, the most popular software packages are included. Then on DVD-2, somewhat less popular software, etc. The last DVDs and Blurays are mainly filled with specialty software concerning for example academic use, computational biology, astromony, and so on. On a Bluray disc, the same software is available as on approximately 5 DVDs, equally ordered by popularity.
DVDs / Blurays can be used in any combination, and you certainly do not need to order the full set. Actually, all software can be automatically downloaded from the internet, whenever it is not included on the DVDs/Blurays that you have available. Most users will find that the DVD-1 plus DVD-2 set is excellently usable, or Bluray-1 of course.

Installer (Netinst) CDs
In case your computer can only use CDs: the installation starter is also available on CD. The idea is that your internet connection will then be used to automatically download the installable software.
With only a Netinst CD and no internet connection, you will only be able to install a very minimal text-based environment.
Special: Netinst+Mac Mini Boot = bootable on Mac Mini 1 (i386) resp. Mac Mini 2 (amd64), since these have bugs that prevent them from booting the normal DVDs; more information here. These can be combined with normal Installer DVDs from which the installable software will then be used (or automatically downloaded from internet).
Installer USB sticks
The Installer USB sticks are simply copies of Installer DVD-1 resp. Bluray-1. They are bootable on PCs that are recent enough (ca. 2005).
We supply "regular" good quality USB sticks. After installing, you can easily re-partition and re-format the USB stick, to get a nice clean stick that you can use for any desired purpose.
Live-Desktop DVDs and USB sticks
Several "Live" DVD flavors are available for amd64 computers. These DVDs will boot directly into a compact Debian environment which runs completely from the DVD. The computer's harddrive will not be used at all. Most hardware including network and video cards will be auto-detected, but expect some rough edges since this is a relatively new development.
Here also, the Live-Desktop USB sticks are identical to DVDs.
Eight flavors of Live DVDs are available, namely containing the seven most popular graphical environments, and another one containing a textual console environment ("Standard").
When the computer is connected to a network, additional software packages can be downloaded and installed immediately from the internet into the running Live system. Since this happens entirely inside the working memory of the computer, it will be gone after a reboot.

Firmware, a.k.a. WiFi
Many WiFi chips that enable access to wireless networks, require loadable firmware that is supplied by the manufacturer but can not be inspected or changed. Since Debian 12, this firmware is included on all official Debian Installer and Live media, as a service to users.
However, not all WiFi chips can be supported by Linux, since not all manufacturers wish to cooperate. In such cases, a USB WiFi dongle may be useful.
Debian Edu ("Skolelinux")
Debian Edu is a CD/Bluray/USB variant containing a fully automated installer for servers, workstations and laptops in schools and other educational institutions. This means preselected options in the installer, preselected packages to be installed, including suitable configuration. For teachers or assistants, it is very easy to set up and administer a school network.
The Edu Netinst CD contains only the installer-starter, and will then download all packages from the internet. The Edu Bluray and USB-stick are all-inclusive and offer full installation without any internet access.
Source
The Source DVDs/Blurays contain all compilable source code that was used to create the installable packages on the Installer media. During daily use of a Debian system, this source code is absolutely useless. It is made available mainly to comply with license terms of the GNU General Public License and variants.
Programmers that like to work with source code are better advised to use source packages from the Debian "unstable" online archive, as that is where the newest development occurs and cooperation is highly appreciated.
Source code packages on the Source DVDs/Blurays are sorted alphabetically, from "a" on Source DVD-1 up to "z" on Source DVD-19. This does not match Installer media that have packages sorted from highest to lowest popularity. To know which Source or Installer DVD contains any particular package, a search function is available.
Which DVDs do I need?
- If you want to install Debian: the installation can be started from Installer DVD-1 or Bluray-1, or the USB stick versions of these; or from a Netinst CD if you have some special need for it.
- If you want all useful software: our advice is using Installer DVD-1 and DVD-2.
- If you also want all "useless" software: all other Installer DVDs or Blurays.
- If you want to use Debian without installing: any Live-Desktop DVD or USB stick.
- If you want to install a school network: a Debian Edu variant.

Using the ordering form at the bottom of this page, prices for all possible orders will be calculated automatically and correctly. This uses the following rules.
Base prices:
- CD base price € 4,50
- DVD base price € 5,50
- Bluray base price € 12,--
- USB-stick "DVD size" (4GB) base price € 15,--
- USB-stick "Bluray size" (25GB) base price € 22,--
Quantity discount: For two or more identical copies of the same CD - DVD - Bluray: 10% discount on the second and further copies; USB: 5% discount on the second and further copies.
Shipping costs:
- Netherlands standard € 4,-- : sturdy cardboard box that will fit through your letterbox for up to about 15 discs. For larger orders, the additional packaging and shipping will be covered by the item prices.
- ...but 1 or 2 USB sticks will fit into an air-cushion envelope with less stamps for € 2,--
- Abroad standard € 9,--
- ...but likewise 1 or 2 USB sticks € 4,--
Returning-customers-discount: When you have ordered from DDDI before and you still know the order number, you will get an extra 2.5% discount on the total order price.
Payment
The order will only be produced and shipped after payment has been received. Paying is possible in several ways:
Netherlands:
Within the Netherlands, you can pay in two ways:| 1) | Send us cash money by regular ('snail') mail. This method is fast, but the postal service never guarantees delivery of anything (unless you pay them more). |
| 2) | Transfer the payment to our bank account using the usual procedures. Note: this is not iDeal or automatic payment, you'll need to initiate the transfer yourself. |
Abroad:
For payments from abroad, the same two possibilities apply:| 1) | Send us cash money in euro coins and bank notes by regular ('snail') mail. This usually takes less than 7 days. |

From countries within the Euro zone that have adjusted their financial
regulations to match European directives, payment can also be
transferred to our Dutch bank account using a cheap IBAN international
transfer.
It may take up to a week before a bank transfer arrives in our account.
Transfers without IBAN and from outside the Euro zone are unacceptable due to the very high costs (EUR 15+ for both sender and receiver). |
In all cases: precise instructions (account numbers, addresses) will be given after the order has been placed. Note that you have no payment obligation whatsoever; if you do not pay, we will not ship.
Donations:
Everything you pay more than the calculated price will be regarded as donation. At least half of that will be transferred to the Debian project. The other half (or less) will be used by the DDDI to promote Debian in the Netherlands and/or Europe. If you want a different division, just say so via the comments facility on the next page.
Order processing and shipping
We stock only blank media, and will start producing your order after we have received your payment. For reasons of efficiency, we will usually process orders in clusters, often in one session per week. So the estimated shipping time will be about a week after we have received and confirmed your payment. For destinations abroad, there will be additional transit time of multiple days.
